InDesign-Setting up a Basic Grid

With your new document open, navigate to the Pages tab, open it and double click on the A-Master page. In CC 2015 it will be highlighted in a light blue (in CC 2017, as seen in the image below, you will see it is a much more brilliant blue). Once on this page we will proceed to set up our grid.

*Applying a grid on the Master page will apply the same grid type of all pages. If you want to experiment with different types of grids, follow these same instructions but do not double-click the A-Master to start.

Modular Grid
To create a modular grid navigate to the Apple Menu > Layout > Create Guides…

This action will open the Create Guides window where you will need to set the number of Columns and Rows and their Gutter widths (usually .125 in). Also remember to check Preview and under “Options” change Fit Guides so that Margins is selected. Below is an example of Modular Grid settings for a 11×17 inch poster.

Once you click OK you will have applied a basic Modular Grid to your A-Master.
Be sure to double click on Page 1 in order to start designing.

Column Grid
To create a Column Grid navigate to the Apple Menu > Layout > Margins and Columns…

This action will open the Margins and Columns window where you will need to set the number of Columns and their Gutter widths (usually .125 in). Remember to check the Preview checkbox to see what you are creating. Below is an example of settings for an 8-Column Grid for a 11×17 inch poster.

Once you click OK you will have applied a basic Column Grid to your A-Master.
Be sure to double click on Page 1 in order to start designing.
